Re: Model 1884

The reason for the error is that the production numbers only take into account the new guns produced. People have associated the number of new guns produced with serial numbers. That can be a problem since new receivers were commonly used to repair guns. In 1880-1882 a total of about 40,000 rifles and carbines (starred guns) were made-up from parts for the National Guard using receivers. These are repaired guns, not new guns and show nowhere in the annual tally. Go to the home page of this web site and look under PRODUCTION DATA to get both the new gun production data and the corrected production data that takes into account epaired guns and the 1891 production variation because of the use of older receivers.
