Here's a different spin.

In the early 1970s, I stumbled onto the remains of about 20 fencing muskets from a little theatre group. Aside from providing the nucleus of my parts stash, I was able to sell around 6 or so (most had no, or totally trashed, wood) "carbines" to re-enactors.

In addition to cutting the barrel a bit short, I deliberately located the front sights wrongly, to reduce the possibility of someone later selling them as real. And, you know, someone DID try. Probably five years later, a guy (and who it was was no surprise to the locals) tried to sell me one of them as a "genuine H troop 7th Cav gun". Didn't work.

A fake is a fake, and shouldn't be made perfectly.
