M1879 Springfield Carbine

Posted by Sam Asbell on Monday, 16 April 2012, at 4:06 p.m.

I just purchased a M1879 carbine serial # 140118. The cartouche appears to be 1880 but it isn't clear. It has the smooth trigger so it is in the correct range. Strangely on the underside of the breech block is stamped "67" with a dot next to the 7. There is also a company letter and rack number on the top of the butt plate and on the stock just above the curve of the butt plate. Does anyone know what the "67" means or have any information on the other numbers and letters? Thanks
