1872 long rifle Springfield

Posted by Lee Block on Wednesday, 11 April 2012, at 10:40 a.m.

I just found a long rifle, Springfield, in my dads closet. It is marked with an eagle, above US Springfield 1872 and on the other side it has model 1871. It has patents listed and the last one is 1868.

I know nothing about guns but I did look at some sites and they say Springfield did not make a rifle between 1870-1873. But I have this one and it is in good condition with no rust at all and original patina and stock color. Also I looked up the 1870 and the 1873 pictures and this gun does not look anything like those hammers. I am guessing it is not a trapdoor rifle from what I can see. But what is it and is it worth anything? My kids are into computers and dont want it and I am getting older so...
