1888 Springfield

Posted by Fred Ganske on Monday, 19 March 2012, at 5:13 p.m.

Hello, I recently purchased a M1888 Springfield. The bore is bright and the gun is in very good condition overall. I was surprised at how easily I was able to hit silhouettes out to 500 yds. even in heavy winds. The cartouch has been sanded off but the proof mark is still barely visible. The serial number 548417 I believe indicates 1892 manufacture. It is missing the rod bayonet but has an original sling marked Rock Island EHS. What I want to know is what is supposed to go in the buttstock? Is it the ruptured shell extractor and an oiler? Also what screws onto the threaded end of the rod bayonet? Thanks
