It is VERY apparent from even the most casual browsing through the SRS data that ANYthing with a Buffington sight was termed a "Model 1884" by the reviewers. Not counting the anal (myself surely included) collectors of today, there is a great deal of sense to that assessment. In terms of military capability, ANY .45-70 rifle with a Buffington sight would serve an identical purpose to the users of the period.
