A VERY simple test of your bore is to tap a .458 soft lead bullet through the bore from the breech end. If the bullet slides through without much resistance your bore is .459 or greater. Next step is to beg a .459/461 slug off one of the guys & try it again. What you are looking for is a good pattern on the FRONT of the bullet, NOT the back. Tapping with a rod will spread the bullet at the rear & it will look good but not tell you the whole story.
You do no have to pound fishing weights into the bore to get a measurement. the are better ways to do that. Some of the guys actually pour a slug of lead at the muzzle or breech end of the barrel. However you want to stop up the bore except for about the last 1" 02 so. DO NOT pour the barrel full. You knew that, right???
Are you using hollow base or flat base bullets? Are the lubed?
A .410/45 shotgun wad may make a difference also. There are pros & cons to using the wads. Try cutting some from cardboard.
