Michael, There is an excellent artical in the MAN AT ARMS magazine, Vol.30, No.6 , 2008, entitled "The Fate on the 7th Cavalry Carbines", by Douglas C. McChristian. In it, he addresses many of the questions you have. You can order back issues on line and there are several other articals on early carbines listed in the back issues that you might order as well. Al Frasca has a good one in Vol.21, No 6, Dec. 1999, that has many of the serial numbers of the early carbines issued to the different Cavalry Units. I have a carbine #42856 that has an 1877 style stock which has been sanded, so I like to think there is a possibility that it was a 7th Cavalry issue, but it is all still a big mystery. Jim
