Take an over sized bullet (tapered) and tap it into the barrel. One can do it from the muzzle down.. and tap it through getting the lands and grooves engraved into the bullet..... Or one can plug the end of the barrel and pour hot lead in.. works better on an open breech weapon. For a spingfield, I'd probably use a .50 cal round ball.. or something like a .46 or .47. I'm assuming your wanting to see what your barrel mics. out at. probably if original... .459 to .462. Not sure if I've ever seen one except for an H&R that mics to .457. Good luck.
