You run into lots of problems with someone else's ammo. I'd take one apart and see what it is. Smokeless, or BP. Sample a few of them. I'd probably if you were wanting to shoot them, mic. the casings and bullet to see if their re-loads or perhaps manufacture made cartridges. I'd still either burn them up just shooting for fun after you found out what was in them.. or first unload all of them, de-primer them and re-load them with what you know you should have.

I know for a fact not all 500 grain loaded cartridges will chamber in all 45/70's. THe early ones were chambered for the 405 grain bullet. My early guns (rifles) will only load these and not the later 500 grain cartridges. The bullet hangs up in the rifling. Good luck and have fun.
