Springfield had consistently reduced the number of ridges on the M73 rod, and by 1877, the number of ridges had been reduced from 7 to 5. Then in April/May of 1878, the new version of the rod appears without the recess in the tip. A month or so later, the armorers start uses the the following notation with respect to rods: Cupping rods M73 and Cupping new rods. So the head change occurs first followed by the cup in the tip as well as cupping the original rods in stock.
