Hello Mike, et al, As to why your replacement stock might have the "ESA" cartouche-- perhaps it was rebuilt or repaired at Springfield, rather than at a western fort. I seem to remember that some carbines were shipped back to Springfield for repair, even after the Little Big Horn battle. If this one does have the "ESA" cartouche, I would imagine it received the stock at Springfield rather than Ft. Abraham Lincoln. Bill M.
