Mike I just purchased 2 trapdoors,a Model 1873 and Model 1868. The Model 1868 is .50-70, and your Model 1873 is .45-70 as answered by several. As one of your replies stated very well, the more you know, the more you realize how little you know. There are a few good books, the 2 volume set is great, a little expensive in today's "Amazon world, but worth every penny. There is another much less expensive book, a paperback, "The .45-70 Springfield" by Joe Poyer and Craig Riesch. Unless you are a gunsmith, take your rifle to a gunsmith and have him chekc it out, tell him you want to shoot it, and if it is sound, buy some blackpowder ammo, and have fun. You will be the highlight of the range after sending a few rounds downrange! Lane Douglas Franklin, TN
