The stamping on the lower stock is a "p"

The Model '73 TD was produces in 45-70 only for general troop use. There are examples with other calibers but these are custom barreled.

224755 was Oct-Dec. 1883. There is little chance that a record of to whom the piece was issued to will be found. Only unit records exist & they are few.

As for reading: There is none better than the two volumes authored by our own Al Frasca. The books are worth their weight in gold.

The more you learn about these rifles the more want to collect them. Also, the more you learn, the less you know. Kind of a catch 22.

You may get a "hit" from the SRS books. How about it Pete, Any thing you can find????
