Agreed.

And, parts switching in service is not always to "bring up to latest configuration" but sometimes merely the result of batch cleaning of weapons.

Parts is parts and as long as every rifle ended up with lock, stock and barrel and all the other parts, sufficiently clean to make the inspector happy, the troops had done their job. Soldiers (and sailors, airmen and Marines) don't care aobut what collectors might think, only what will be sufficient to keep them out of trouble. Although, in combat areas, thre is additional motivation to be sure they will function properly when needed.
