Yes, as you say, these starred guns, which were built in 1881 and 1882, would not have had the 1884 block, the 1884 Bluffington rear sight, or the 1890 barrel band made to shield the rear sight. But I have had two other starred carbines over the years which had the 1884 sights and this 1890 barrel band. I always figured that these starred serial number guns, built for Militia / State Guard use, could well have been upgraded with these more modern parts for Spanish Amierican War use. Is this likely?
