clean the item first wiping down all residue and fingerprints. Add the filings to the muratic acid and your tent idea will work I think. As far as length exposed? I'm not sure and I did not neutralize the item after browning. Just cleaned the gun like always. Leaves a nice brown patina.

To note, I was cleaning some original dug iron halter parts to use on my re-enacting halter (nothing like having the original parts) and short of sand or bead blasting, I used muratic acid. The result was my sword and gun on the wall at the time was left with the patina that I rather liked and left!

Try it on a sample piece and see if you like it. I don't recommend it for faking antiques, but I'm sure it would fool a lot of experts.
