After I've had a chance to see the magazine, I'll probably have quite a bit more to say.

It's sad that our first flurry of activity when a new specimen pops up usually seems to be one of denial - but the $$$ stakes are awfully high, and the ID process is, IMHO, extremely nebulous, for all the reasons you state, plus many others. For one, with 36 (38?) specimens to choose from, could they not have found one that REALLY showed the "match", perhaps a split image at 200X or so? That would have impressed the hell out of me.

To say nothing of the fact that the arm in question needs to be without sin, of which I'm not yet convinced, in this case.
