Ever hear of Fairfax Rod & Gun Club in Virginia? I do not know when the matches were officially sanctioned, but I participated starting around 1975 and at that time it was 400 yards, offhand. A fine gentleman by the name of Ellis Lea ran/coached many of the matches. Folks were using trapdoors, beaumonts, 1871 mausers, the odd martini and rolling blocks - no calibers less than 40. I started out with an old mauser and graduated to a rolling block and finally to a trapdoor. Now I do the odd local cowboy match and crank out the old M1 for CMP matches. Found I cannot really be competitive unless I shoot on a weekly basis and of course time takes it's toll on the eyes - actually looking forward to cataract now the matches are just for fun.
