marks on bullets

Posted by john martin on Monday, 25 July 2011, at 2:42 p.m.

The other day I loaded up some 405 grn, .458 bullets and crimped in the designated crimp groove. I then, just to test my crimping and to insure the round would chamber correctly, inserted the round in the chamber and securely locked down the thumb latch. Then I opened the breech to eject the round and noticed 3 slight indentions in the circumference of the bullet just a little forward of the brass cartridge case, I am assuming that these marks are made by the bullet touching the rifling. Is this appropriate? I loaded a couple more rounds and seated the bullet just a little deeper and still had these three marks, just not as pronounced as before. Is this ok or should I seat the bullets deep enough where these marks are no longer visible?

Thank you for the benefit of your experience and expertise in all things trapdoor. I am learning and thoroughly enjoying my education.
