Mine is 5858 - cam blew anyhow.
Paid $150 for it around 1980. Newspaper ad. Went to see it, guy said "I suppose it's just like cars, anything used is worth about half of what you paid for it, right?" To my shame, I didn't argue with him. One box of shells through it - kicked too much for him*.
Worse yet, as I was leaving, he, noticing that I had not brought a case with me, INSISTED on including a nice Browning soft-case in the deal!
I think the cam-blow was my pay-back! :-( Never have fixed it - but it's "on the list".
Two things I did do: Replaced that sorry, poorly tempered, POS bent flat-stock mainspring with an SA original. Lock action IMMEDIATELY went from mushy to crisp, and seemingly about halved the hammer fall time. Also fitted an SA band spring - improved the appearance immensely.
*he had a point there; it has a nasty chop with heavy loads - terrible butt shape. All in all, were I H&R, I'd hang my head in shame. Great idea - but poorly executed; I guess it was the best they could do. Sad.
