There was a numbering hiccup during the 1877/78 period. The Armory was closed for six months because the appropriations bill did not pass in Congress. At about the same time they (SA) changed their accounting of arms production from calendar year to fiscal year, or vice-versa, I can never remember which. That was ALSO the same general time that the date was included as part of the cartouche.

Bottom line is that there are some unresolvable anomalies in the numbering and markings, with the general observation being that MANY more arms are found with ESA/1877 stamps than were supposedly produced during that year (no matter which "year" you are speaking of).

Sorry about the roof - I'd sure try and find the money somewhere else. :-(
