Thanks for the start John....the design is very similar to the line throwing gun, but there are no blemishes or imprints on the barrel indicating it was ever used this way. The case actually has hardened wood shafts and bronze harpoon heads with the cable connector slots to attach it to an auxillary line. I found an obsure thread of someone finding one of these in 2002 but it turned up no real info for me. Hopefully someone can provide some more info in the future...it's become a real mystery what hidden history lies in this case.
