Wow, that is a bunch. I'll remember that (and get a brass plug) if I ever get around to using a 500 grain bullet. But the 405 is working well for me, so that might be a while.
I've never measured my compression, I just compressed until I got the right depth with 70 grains to seat the 405, then made a gauge in order to repeat the process faster and more consistently. It's still somewhat slow, but I especially enjoy working with the cartridge and black powder, so...not a problem. I'm still only loading six at a time, and then firing a group when I can get around to it. Heck, when I go hunting, I'll probably only carry about six spare cartridges with me. !! Still experimenting with different wads, but otherwise load development is done.
I would guess I'm only compressing the powder about .2", or a tiny bit more, to get 70 grains in the case, under the 405.
