Let me clarify the "SA did not keep records . . . . . . " statement. Of course they did, but, as far as we know there was NO "master log" of what went where, by number. At some period they did put an itemized packing list in the 20-gun crates; this MAY have been a continuous practice, but only a handful - literally - are known to have survived. At point of issue within a unit, surely there was a notation that Pvt. Jones was given number 123445, but these bottom level records are - apparently - long gone.

A list of "Custer" guns - which trade in six figures - would be worth WAY WAY more than its' weight in gold, and has - as I said - kept MANY people on the hunt.
