Re: Springfield Trapdoor Serial Number
Posted by Bob Beran on Sunday, 15 May 2011, at 7:21 p.m.
Hi, I just purchased a Model 1873 Springfield Carbine. The seriel # is 8928, it has a checkered hammer, has an"H" stamped on the barrel in fromt of the receiver and a faint "I", and what looks like a "P" or "D" on the left side of the barrel near the receiver. There is an "R" stamped on thte left side of the rear site (that appears to be original). The stock has had repairs and has no surviving markings. The lock plate has "U.S. Springfield" The butt plate seems to be a homemade one of some type of composite material but is OLD. The metal parts of the gun are in remarkable conduition with very little pitting. Any information that you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
