Good afternoon, "jd",

Well, I checked VOLUMES 1 through 4 of the SPRINGFIELD RESEARCH SERVICES'S hard-copy "SERIAL NUMBERS OF U.S. MARTIAL ARMS" and your S/N 47447 is not listed in any VOLUME. And of the (8) guns, bracketing 47447 in all (4) VOLUMES, only (3) of the next-closest ones on either side (i.e., above and below) were even .50-Caliber guns (47387, 47487, and 47379 were listed as having been Model 1868s and therefore .50-70). And none of the "adjacent" S/Ns were even anywhere close enough to have any relevance. I did note that two of the Model 1868 Rifles (S/Ns 476387 and 47487) had ties to us here in the Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania area): 47387 was listed as having been transferred (?) from the WASHINGTON (PENNSYLVANIA) MILITIA to the DUQUESNE (PENNSYLVANIA) GREYS (an old-time drill team, if I remember correctly, and later a semi-professional ball team in that little steel town) with a date-of- record" of 08-19-1881. And S/N 47487 was listed as having been assigned to the old PITTSBURGH-WASHINGTON MILITIA with a date-of-record of 07-04-1880. Sorry, but no "HIT" on this one...
