Model 1873 Rifle
Posted by Joseph on Saturday, 7 May 2011, at 6:15 a.m.
I just purchased a Rifle at a yard sale from an elderly woman for $50.00 that on top behind the Trap Door reads U.S. Model 1873. The Rifle has heavy rust but is what appears to be in working order. Has a fancy "P" below the Trigger assembly and reads upside down on the left side of stock, "Property of the State of Kansas" I can just make out an Eagle and Springfield on the hammer side. Can anyone tell me if this means it was issued through the 1st or 2nd Calvary out of Fort Riley or Fort Madison Iowa. She said her Grand Father found the Gun with (Bayounet attached) by some bolders along the Mississipi River in Illinois along time ago.....I know too crazy of a story huh? but some how I believe her. Thanks for any Info, Joseph
