Dick, Many thanks for your thoughts. I tend to frequent Salter for his varied array of weapons, particularly British... more Sniders in one place than most anywhere else online, but even there his descriptions can be off. A supposedly all-complete short rifle had its cleaning rod replaced by that of a corroded 50/70 with a crudely twisted end instead of threads, a missing rear swivel and a breech block that probably came from another gun. A supposedly "maker unknown" carbine has a pretty visible remainder of the well-known E.M. Reilly on the lock plate. I am always amazed, though no one should be, at your detailed past acquaintance with virtually every one of these carbines that crops up. It did seem to me that the replaced hammer, if nothing else, was a considerable blemish to the pedigree of this gun.
