Hi Steven. Two things give this one away. Number one: Look at the picture that shows the inletted wood area just under the trigger guard. That rather large hole just in front of the front screw hole was put there as a clean out hole for the wood chips that had to be removed when Springfield drilled the stock for the cleaning rod. Since no carbine had a rod installed under the barrel, no clean out hole was ever drilled under the trigger guard. Therefore if the clean out hole is present, it had to originally be a rifle stock. Number two: If you look closely at the pictures of the tip/end of the stock, you can see that the entire end of the stock has been replaced to cover up the fact that there was a channel in the stock under the barrel for the cleaning rod. This joint in the wood will be hidden/covered up by the barrel band. Hope this helps!
