Win 1885 barrel

Posted by David Gibbens on Monday, 28 March 2011, at 8:59 p.m.

I know this is off topic, but have been around this site for years and value the thoughts of those on this site.

My wife gave me an exceptionally nice Winchester 1885 for Christmas this year. The only problem is that the bore is gone. The barrel is a #3 30" in 32-40. I have cleaned, scrubed but it is still rough. Would like to shoot it, but, at 50 yds, with a marble windage adj rear site and a bubble windage adjustable hooded front site it groups like a shotgun.

I had thought about relining it, but have not read much that supports it in larger cals (above 44-40). Hate to have it rebored (say to 38-55) or just replace the barrel with a new one. Ideal would be to find a original, but, one luck there.

Would welcome any thoughts or suggestions.

Thanks,

David
