I understand your enthusiasm for sure. Picked up my first "Trapdoor" last November. It's a model 1873. (rifle)

If you love the Springfield rifle, you really should learn to re-load for it, using black powder. It can seem to be a combination of voo-doo, ju-ju, magic, art, luck, and science, but by diligently working at it and experimenting since last November, (but only shooting about 4 rounds per week) I finally shot a 100 yard, 2.5" group with my rifle the other day, using black powder and pure lead bullets...and the bore of my rifle is not what you would call "great". At any rate, I think the rifle is most dignified, and safe, shooting the original load. And WAY more fun.

I agree that the recoil of the rifle is not objectionable, although a compressed 70 grain charge of Swiss black powder probably kicks a little bit more than the Black Hills ammo. I have heard others comment that the rifle kicks hard, but I too would disagree.

I'm planning to hunt black bear with mine.
