Tapering a barrel is not that time consuming a job. The taper goes from the muzzle to the stock tip, just over 9 inches. After machining there's about a half hour filing and sanding, then use a rear sight base to align the barrel to machine the slot to braze the front sight base on. Of course you need a lathe and milling machine with tooling- only a few thousand dollar investment.
