1873 cleaning rod

Posted by wdsmith on Wednesday, 23 February 2011, at 3:36 p.m.

I have an 1873 trapdoor Springfield SN 339000 for which I have received a cleaning rod from Dixie Gun Works. This measures about 35 3/4". I can only inert the rod into the groove in the stock about 3" where it appears to run into solid wood. My gunsmith has taken the barrel off, and he seems certain the channel only bores into the fore end of the stock a few inches. Can you tell me how to reconcile this finding given the length of the rod and the apparent shorter distance allowed for a rod adequately long to clean the barrel?

Many thanks
