Re: Springfield Trapdoor Serial Number

That lengthy response is probably from Doc AV, who contributes equally detailed and usually accurate information on the CartridgeCollectors dot org forum. He is an encyclopedic wealth of knowledge on all aspects of firearms, especially military ones.

I pretty much accept whatever he says as Gospel. I know that the Dixie catalog many years ago (and probably still) mentioned something similar on metric threads and Springfield sizes, but I put very little faith in much of what Dixie claims about anything.

More information may be available from the American Precision Museum in Windsor, VT, located in the old Robbins & Lawrence factory building. Their emphasis is on machine tools, which, of course, are closely linked with the firearms industry, and military arms which provided the large size orders and demand for interchangeability that combined with machine tools to focus in precision measurement and standardization. It is well worth the trip to visit there. They have examples of many of the different firearms actually made in that building, as well as an array of machine tools, including a number of gun making tools with the tooling, jigs, etc in place.
