Another approach - IF you can find a close enough diameter - is to try a metric tap of 1mm pitch. After all, 25.4 tpi is AWFULLY close to 26 tpi, especially on a "thread by thread" basis in a very shallow hole. 0.6 of a thread, divided by 25 (or 0.024mm) is not a lot of interference. In a deep hole it would bind of course, but we're not talking about a deep hole.

I'd think a couple of twists would clear your jam. In fact, I even suspect that if you carefully tapered the screw you just might be able to get it to start without ANY tapping - after all, you are only going to do it once.

Just some thoughts.
