Re: Rear sight base threads

Good morning Carey,

If you would E-Mail your USPS street mailing address I would be only to happy to mail the tap to you. My only concern is that of all of the many tapped holes on the TRAPDOOR Springfield, the two Sight-mounting holes are about the only two BLIND holes on the whole gun - - and the tap is the standard tapered-end configuration, rather than being a bottoming tap. I will check the fit of the tap into one of the holes on the barrel of one of my guns to see how much "grab" there is (the tapped holes, as you have undoubtedly noticed, are not all that deep because of strength considerations). If the "bad" hole on your gun is notg really badly chewed up you might be able to get the tap started and then lubricate the hole well with cutting oil and carefully work the tap into the existing threads [perhaps my "younger son" Ernie Brandt will have some suggestions?]. One of the major issues is getting the re-tapped hole cleaned out as thoroughly as possible. It would then be necessary to clean any chips and other debris out of the hole and flush it thoroughly with alcohol using a Q-Tip to "cut" the oil and then allow it to dry so that the chips could be vacuumed out.

Anyhow, I will check out my 0.157"-26 tap in one of the Sight Screw holes and see how promising the idea sounds, and then I'll post what I find here for you.

With very best regards,

PETE
