I suspect the s/n is really 54244X (lift the hammer), and that it was a rod-bayonet rifle - sometimes referred to as the Model 1888. Original barrel length was 32-5/8", and someone likely sawed off the bayonet mechanism.

If everything else is OK, it's certainly worth cleaning up, by say, cutting the barrel to 26" or 28" and patching the stock. I don't think that "restoring" it to original configuration would be cost-effective, but that's your call. It certainly COULD be made to look "as issued", if ypu wanted to buy the parts.
