Re: Smokeless Load for a Trapdoor

I'll throw in my 2 cents worth at this point.

I push a .458, 300--330 grain lead lubed bullet with 14.5-15.0 grains of Hodgdon's Trail Boss Smokeless powder. No filler, no wad, NO MESS to clean up.

Cup pressure just under 20,000. Muzzle velocity at 1300. WONDERFUL kick. You know you have pulled the trigger & can see the target without waiting for the smoke to clear. I know, I know, it ain't traditional, but I ain't your traditional old guy either. I figure if it ain't broke fix it anyway.

I have found that the smokeless powder's instant ignition "cups" the base of the bullet enough to act as a gas check & at the same time stabilizes the bullet to keep it from rattling down the bore.

Not every TD I have likes this load but it has become my "all around" favorite to murder paper targets. My two H&R Officers Models gobble this load up & are "tack drivers". O.K. it keeps the groups down to "feel good" level. My Grandson won't shoot anything else but the H&R. We have matching bruises.

The ONLY way to get the results you want is to load your own rounds. It's not all that expensive to get started & you will have the satisfaction of knowing exactly what is being fed to the old work horse.

Just my thoughts. No charge.
