Actually 96300 - I've handled 96271 (narrow) and I know who had 96309 (wide). For years, people have claimed there was an "overlap", but usually much closer to the change. However, ALL such allegations have ultimately been debunked, for one reason or another.

I'll bet what you saw had a leading "1" obscured - 187684 would be a very believable carbine number. I MAY have seen the gun - I looked at something recently that had a wide block in a narrow receiver (but you REALLY had to look close) - that would be another possible explanation.
