Re: Rear sight question for 1873

I've found a number of rear sights from early to Buffingtons at the fort sites out west while I've been detecting. The majority of them are around the quarter's and rifle range areas. I really never wondered why, just figured they were up-grading to be competitive during the marksman ship competitions and shooting programs. I would venture to bet very few Military guns that were used out west in the 1870's and still were in service during the 1880's, escaped being fooled with.
