Isn't the rear one backwards, too?

As to the Chaffee-Reese, aside from being butt-heavy and excessively complicated, the fragile magazine was a total disaster. The cartridges are not spring-fed like any other tubular magazine - they are physically dragged forward by a system of ratcheting bars linked (when cutoff is "on") to the very awkward (due to handle location) bolt. Great care is required else you will break something, or cause a jam. OK on the range, maybe, but no gun for a rough and tumble fire-fight.

The Hotchkiss will only feed 405gr. loads; and the CR will only feed 500gr. loads - mix in a 405 and it will jam. Not smart. Both systems are covered in detail in my second book. My CR is nicer than that one, which is pretty nice. Rare gun.
