Barrel and markings?

Posted by Cary Meyers on Sunday, 30 January 2011, at 9:39 a.m.

I have my 1873 completely stripped down with the exception of the tang breech screw. the barrel/receiver, and the trigger guard nuts. The stock is accurate to the gun. I also bought the Joe Poyer and Craig Riesch book which has a lot of info. All parts seem right to my gun, but there are markings on some of the small parts and the barrel which I can't figure out. The butt plate looks like an ?1862 musket leftover and has a number stamped on the stock side of the part. My trigger also has a number stamped on it "2" as I recall. The underside of the barrel has a P~15 P with stars stamped next to each of these characters. What do these stars mean? On another note, it appears my rear sight is frozen in that I cannot slide the sight up for elevation adjustment. Is there a catch or lever to release it or is it stuck? If stuck, any suggestions to release it? The sight screws are slotted which are probably replacements from what I have read. My rifle serial is around 224,000 which seems to be from around 1882. Thanks.
