Trapdoor Markings

Posted by John Kintz on Friday, 28 January 2011, at 11:30 a.m.

I have a trapdoor that I am trying to get an idea of the model, year of manufacture, etc. This has been in the family for years and handed down from my grandfather. The markings that I can see are as follows: On the side plate in front of the hammer, it is marked U.S. Springfield with an Eagle. Behind the trigger it is marked what looks like 1868, it is a little hard to see. On top of the trap door, it is marked 1869 U.S. The serial number is stamped on the barrel and receiver is 5610. The barrel appears to be about 30" long and there is a triangular shaped bayonet attached that is about 18.5 inches long overall. The rifle does have sling swivels and the ejector rod appears to be original. The gun appears to be all original and no signs of any restoration and I would say fair condition. Thanks for any help.
