Dick,

I have two. Identical fired in the same gun. The mark is caused from being fired formed in the chamber of some .45-70. Not a trapdoor. the casings are benet primed casings prior to 1877 and from the others recovered at the site.. I'd even venture to say the time frame was 1874-1875 or part of 1876. I'd date the casings on the early scale as as the troops there..were gone most of 76 and 77, and at new stations after that.

I'll dig them out and take a new side by side photo, and check for the extraction mark.
