Probabley a long shot but you might want to check out the remington model 1867 rolling block type rifles. Some of the danish contract ones were a rimfire round that were "similiar" to the 45-70.(11.4x51R I think ?). Then later some of them were converted to centerfire 45-70, perhaps leftover ones still in North America. Anyway I would be curious as to to what kind of marks those things leave behind when they go bang. Whether these conversions dates are later than your site I don't know. I am not even sure if the U.S. army ever adopted any of these in any form? Although other military groups did. Certainly would have been available commercially one would think. I will stand corrected on any thing in this message. You will probably have to do some more digging on this one (pun intended).
