As no one else has answered yet, I'll chime in. I'm no expert, and don't have access to the SRS database, so I can't say anything about the weapon's history beyond its likely production date of 1886. Did you measure the barrel from inside with the breech closed? That is carbine barrel length, but the lack of bar and ring might indicate a cut-down rifle... what of the gun's other features? Does the trigger guard have a sling swivel? Is there a plugged remainder of ramrod channel under the front wood? What kind of rear sight does it have, and is it marked R or C? The diamond plate might be a company letter or just an ID plate added by an owner after the gun left service. Hard to tell without pictures.
