John, Look for evidence of the ramrod groove on the underside of the fore stock. Sometimes these were hidden with wood putty or wood after the (dastardly deed) stock and barrel were cut down. The ramrod groove should be bored through into the recess for the lock assembly. I am not certain this was done on all Model 73s. But it is sure one way of telling if your piece is a cut down rifle.
