1873 Springfield Carbine or cut down rifle?

Posted by John Cortese on Thursday, 20 January 2011, at 6:35 p.m.

My father-in-law passed away a few months ago and my mother-in-law found an old gun in the attic and gave it to me. She has no idea how long my father-in-law had it. The family has lived in the house for over 75 years. Anyway, it is I believe an 1873 Springfield Carbine, serial number 78XXX (5 digits long) with no star or anything afterwards. Here is my question. The barrel is 24 inches long. Can this be or is this a cut down rifle. Looks very original and authentic when compared to photo's on line of early carbines and doesn't look altered. Any idea what I have?
