I'm not an expert on gun lamps, but consider the following. The bulb and on/off switch will usually be at the top (muzzle) of the rifle. The wire then runs down to the floor terminating in the plug, that plugs into the wall outlet.

Now, you have two choices for the wire. It can run down the exterior of the rifle (not cosmetically attractive), or you can run it down the bore and conceal the wire (as is done on most all lamps) but the wire needs to exit somewhere. In the case of a breech loader I guess you can just leave the breech open, but I have seen some where a hole is drilled in the barrel/breech for the wire to exit.

Basically, when I hear of a gun turned into a lamp, I immediately think CHECK FOR HOLES :)
